Gloucester Carnival

Saturday the 23rd of July will welcome back Gloucester’s annual Carnival. The City Centre will once again be filled with a parade of floats and hordes of carnival entertainers to ‘celebrate’ Gloucester and all that is great about the city.

The 80th year of the Carnival will wind its way along Westgate Street, through The Cross, down Eastgate Street and round to Gloucester Park. The fun won’t end there, as when the procession reaches Gloucester Park, there will be a stage with live music playing until 10:00pm. The park will also be hosting the Wilson Funfair, food and drink stalls and more.

Karen Pearson, event and operations manager commented:

“We are working hard to deliver a really impressive Carnival through Gloucester’s city centre this year and give the community something to enjoy. It was received so well last year and we really want to keep the momentum going.”

This year’s ‘Celebrate’ theme was derived from the idea that 2016 sees plenty to celebrate in Gloucester.  Starting with the Queens 90th birthday, the 800th anniversary of Henry |||’s coronation at Gloucester Cathedral, Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday, the 400th anniversary since Shakespeare passed away, 100 years since Roald Dahl was born and 200 years since Charlotte Bronte was born, to name a few.

Councillor Lise Noakes, cabinet member for culture and leisure said:

“Carnival is a great tradition and it’s wonderful to see it still going strong after 80 years. It is important that we continue to support events such as carnival that are great for the city and are such good examples of community involvement and how culture can be at the heart of the city”.
